Litter box training
The cornerstone of cat coexistence. Without this, everything else is moot.

Most cats learn on their own: the instinct to bury is innate. But a wrong setup (small box, wrong litter, bad location) is the #1 cause of cat surrender. Get it right from day 1.
What you get
- Zero accidents at home
- Avoids stress-driven urinary problems
- Allows early detection of health issues
80% of inappropriate elimination is due to bad setup, not disobedience.
Before you start
- · Have a correct litter box ready before the cat arrives
Materials
- · 1 litter box per cat + 1 extra (N+1 rule)
- · Unscented clumping litter
- · Metal scoop
Step by step
- 1
Pick the right box
At least 1.5× the cat's length. No lid to start (cats prefer ventilation). Low edges for kittens and seniors.
- 2
Pick the right litter
Unscented bentonite clumping is the favorite of 95% of cats. Avoid crystal and scented litters: they hate them.
- 3
Place in a quiet area
Far from food and water, accessible 24/7, no noisy machines (washer). On a multi-story home, one per floor.
- 4
Show and let him explore
Take him to the box after meals and waking. If he scratches or uses it, calm verbal praise. If not, don't insist.
- 5
Scoop twice a day
Remove feces and urine morning and night. Full litter change every 1-2 weeks. A dirty box = he seeks alternatives (your bed, a rug).
Common mistakes
- Starting with a covered box
- Switching litter brand abruptly
- Punishing accidents (creates anxiety and worsens the problem)
- One single box for multiple cats
If something isn't working
Pees outside the box
→ Vet first: rule out cystitis, stones. Then audit setup: litter, location, cleanliness, number of boxes.
Sprays urine vertically
→ Neuter (if not done) and reduce stress: pheromones (Feliway), environmental enrichment, block view of outside cats.
Pro tips
- Double-mesh scoop = faster cleaning and less litter waste.
- Switch litter gradually (75% old + 25% new for 4 days) to avoid rejection.
Deep dive
Correct litter box use is the most critical skill for cat coexistence. Inappropriate elimination is the #1 reason for surrender and return at shelters. The N+1 rule (one box per cat plus one extra), unscented bentonite litter and daily cleaning solve 90% of cases without further training.
