Name recognition

The base of all communication with your cat.

Name recognition

Before any cue, your cat must learn that a specific sound (his name) means "look at me". Without this, everything else is background noise.

What you get

  • Instant attention
  • Reduces unwanted behavior
  • Foundation for all later training

Without name recognition, no further training is possible.

Before you start

  • · Live with you at least a week
  • · Trust your presence

Materials

  • · High-value treats (tuna, chicken, small cheese)
  • · Quiet place

Step by step

  1. 1

    Pair name + reward

Say the name once in a happy voice. The moment he looks (even briefly), mark "yes" and treat. Repeat 5-10 times.

  2. 2

    Increase distance

Repeat from another room or when he's distracted. If he comes or looks: premium treat.

  3. 3

    Generalize

Practice at different times and contexts: playing, resting, eating. Never use the name to scold.

Common mistakes

  • Repeating the name 5 times in a row
  • Using the name for something unpleasant (bath, medication)
  • Expecting response without reward during learning

If something isn't working

Always ignores the name

Switch to an irresistible treat (tuna, cheese) and shorten distance to 1 m.

Pro tips

  • Train right before mealtimes for maximum motivation.
  • Sessions of 1-2 minutes max; cats get bored quickly.

Deep dive

Name recognition is the first step in any cat training. Unlike dogs, cats are selective and only respond when it's worth it. That's why the name-treat association must be consistent and without exception during the first weeks.
